Socio-economic rights – further consultation

A government-appointed commission has invited views on whether socio-economic rights should be included in any future Bill of Rights for the UK. These could include rights to a minimum standard of living and a range of social security benefits, as well as adequate healthcare, housing and education.

The Commission on a Bill of Rights was established by the government in March 2011. It is principally concerned with rights in relation to group equality, criminal justice and administrative justice. But it notes the view, expressed by some in an earlier consultation, that neither the European Convention on Human Rights nor the Human Rights Act provides adequate protection for a category of rights known as economic, social and cultural rights.

The consultation period ends on 30 September 2012.
